#DadFit Guest Post: 5 Apps for Your App-solute Best Beach Body

Powerhouse Downloads: 5 Apps for Your App-solute Best Beach Body

As summer quickly approaches, we can guess what you’re thinking – and it’s all about getting that perfect beach bod to impress the ladies when you hit the sandy beaches in your new board shorts. Lucky for you, what they’re saying is true: there really is an app for everything.

Below, we’ve put together a list of our favorite apps that will have you ready for the beach in no time flat. And it’s not just about exercise – we’ve thrown some great nutrition-based apps in the mix as well. So grab your surfboard, board shorts, and shades, and head out to soak up the sun after taking advantage of these awesome apps:

iMapMy

Free

iMapMy has quickly become a popular choice for mapping physical activity of all kinds. The app is available for the Android, iPhone, and Blackberry, and uses your phone’s built-in GPS to help you track your workouts. Whether you’re running, biking, or something else entirely, it will help you track your distance, speed, calories burned, and route. When you’re finished, be sure to hit “save” so you can come back and look at past workouts to see the progress you’ve made.

Men’s Health Workouts Lite

Free

This free app takes tips from some of the world’s top athletes, strength coaches, and fitness experts and puts it all together at the tip of your fingers. Browse through workouts to find step-by-step instructions and photos to help guide you. The lite version contains five workouts, but if you’d like access to more, simply upgrade to the full version and you’ll have access to hundreds of exercises and workouts.

Lose It

Free

Lose it is a great app to help you track the nutrition content of what you eat each day, including calorie count, carbs, fiber, sodium, and protein. Simply browse through the extensive food library and add meals to your day. Then, set a daily calorie budget and track how close you are to your desired intake. By signing up for a free LoseIt.com account, you’ll be able to add friends who can motivate you, earn badges based on your accomplishments, share your progress on social networks and more.

Restaurant Nutrition

Free

Take control of your eating habits with the Restaurant Nutrition app. It seems easy to keep track of what you’re eating when you’re making food for yourself, but as soon as you go out to eat with friends or family, things can get a little more challenging. That’s where this app comes in. Restaurant Nutrition features nutritional data from more than 60,000 food items in 250 restaurants across the U.S. Simply search for your food item to find nutrition information like fat, calories, protein, and carbs. Then, track your intake and at the end of the day, you’ll have an overview of your intake.

Sportaneous

Free

If you’re like most guys, eventually you’ll get tired of the same old routine – cardio, weightlifting, cardio, weightlifting, and on and on. Luckily, the Sportaneous app is designed for guys who want to play a pickup sport but don’t have anyone to play with. The app lets you create a game and invite others in the area to participate (it’s all tracked by GPS) or join a game that someone else has created.

Next time you need some killer workout and nutrition tips, look no further than these five apps. They’ll have you looking great – and beach ready – in no time at all.

My #DadFit Commitment: Week 1 – There is NOW a Level 0

I’m not posting any pics this week (you’re welcome).  But here’s a quick update on the pain I’ve caused myself trying to get ALL in shape in one week.

  1. Hopefully I didn’t tweek my back doing straight-leg dead lifts at the gym.
  2. Was at the gym 3 days this week and almost rehashed a quad tear I had in college from doing front squad, lunges, and leg extensions.
  3.  Went for a 3+ mile walk around the neighborhood and my feet were burning in pain within 5 minutes.  I’m thinking that they are just weak and need to be strengthened again.  They are still throbbing.

I keep seeing CrossFit everywhere.  And NOT wanting to do that is starting to turn into a motivator.  I am not externally motivated, and just like track, I cannot compete against myself.  I need to see my opponent, and I need to beat them.

So my question is WHY?  Why go to the gym?  My feet today told me why I need to continue to pound the pavement.  I do not like to feel weak, and I don’t like to be unable to do what I think I should be able to do.  It’s not a vanity thing to me.  I mean, I know I’m squishy, but I’m not going for a look, and I’m not aiming for a certain weight ( I know I will get to a healthy weight as I begin to feel better on the inside).  It’s not like I get winded walking up the stairs, or I can’t see my feet, but I’m doing this because I should be able to walk around the block without my feet causing me that much pain within a quarter-mile.

So here’s to Week 2!

2009... Going in the wrong direction

My Plan to Get #DadFit

I have been spending the last two years ignoring the number one thing I know for fact to be the key to getting into shape: ACCOUNTABILITY. Granted, my wife has encouraged, nagged, and tried to joke with me to find a way to motivate me but I ONLY internally motivated.

WHY NOT JOIN A CROSSFIT?

Simply put I am stubborn.  I want to accomplish this myself. In fact, I have a plethora of excuses for not wanting to do CrossFit, but I think these are the most honest.

MY PUBLIC COMMITMENT

I am committing to giving myself the next 45 days from April 15 to May 31 to actually see what I can do to really get in shape if I push myself. I’m not doing this out of vanity but in order to be healthy for my kids and to get using sexier for my wife.

I will be doing regular updates on my blog and on my twitter in regards to how my progress is going and what I’m doing not only in the gym but at home wrestling with the kids and getting out with the family to accomplish this goal.

Once Upon a Time...

2009... Going in the wrong direction

This is where I am starting from now!

Wish me luck!
